From Glandular Fever to Being Diagnosed with ME/CFS: My Story of Chronic Illness, Trauma and Nervous System Dysregulation | Episode 1

Welcome to the very first episode of the “Calm Your Nervous System” podcast! I’m truly so excited to finally be bringing this to life, and I hope you find so much value in hearing me and my guests share stories of how to recover from chronic illnesses and prevent them, and the importance of our nervous system (and so, so much more!) with you.

In today’s episode, I’m taking you back to where it all began. For so many of us, we share a similar tale and I hope in recounting mine, you will be able to see yourself in my story and want to hear more about prevention and recovery strategies on future episodes of the podcast!

Whether it’s through struggling at school, abusive relationships (slight trigger warning for this episode for sexual trauma, though no details are shared), feeling misunderstood at work or even being made to sit on the floor at a Beyoncé concert (YES, that actually happened!), I’m holding nothing back in this one. I’ve certainly had to deal with my fair share of shit (that reminds me - if you don’t like swearing you probably will want to click the “X” now!) and I just know that you might see yourself in my story.

After you’ve listened, I’d love to know what you thought, so scroll down and choose your favourite way of connecting with me and send me a quick message. I’ll catch you in part 2 where I’m sharing more about my recovery journey!

In this episode, I’m chatting about:

  • How my ME was kicked off when I got glandular fever at 15

  • Going through various jobs and relationships and struggling with getting more and more ill

  • What finally led to my diagnosis of ME/CFS

  • Being discriminated against in the workplace as a disabled person

  • All the adaptations I had to make to my life in order to remain functioning, working and making money
